What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is a practice that involves being with people as they seek to deepen their relationship with the interconnected forces throughout the world or grow in their personal spirituality. It typically involves one-on-one sessions with a trained spiritual director who provides non-judgmental, hospitable, and meditative guidance. Spiritual direction can benefit anyone, regardless of their religious affiliation or beliefs, and it can help individuals cultivate a greater sense of purpose, meaning, and connection in their lives. Do I Need a Spiritual Director?

These are deep questions. Spiritual directors go to work every day – listening, asking questions, offering compassion – to help people find their own answers. Workable answers. Answers that are both personal and practical. That builds inner strength and equanimity.

As a spiritual director, I honor your birthright to discern your own spiritual path. We serve all society by helping each person find balance and compassion.

Like psychotherapy, spiritual direction is often offered as a one-to-one or group experience in private sessions with spiritual mentors who have most likely completed extensive formation for this practice and service.

A spiritual director includes and relies on your own understanding to Spirit, to God, to Allah, to refuge in the Buddha, to the Universe, to Nature, or however, you name the Ground of All Being. Spiritual direction includes this connection as a third partner in the process. And if you don’t know or have a sense of that connection, a spiritual companion can help you discern that, without coercion but in deep respect to your own ability to discover and articulate the ways in which you innately connect.

  • Part of our spiritual journeys includes different life transitions. Creating personalized ceremonies and rituals can be a meaningful way to memorialize and share those transitions. Let’s work together to build something meaningful.

    We begin with a discussion about your specific needs and desires. We can find items or experiences that are significant to you and your journey, such as poetry, music, or souvenirs. Together we can create a space that celebrates this transition and share it with whomever you choose.

  • What a wonderful time it is for you as an engaged couple choosing to make a commitment to each other. I have worked with couples of mixed faith, shared faith, or no faith at all. They all share the desire to make official their love for each other. Whether different-sex, same-sex, or nontraditional, together we will create a ceremony that is right for you.

    We will meet to learn your story and wants for the ceremony. I will then create a ceremony for you using your ideas. I will arrive early on your ceremony day to coordinate with any other wedding professionals (photographer, charter, etc.). I am also available for rehearsals if needed.
